Strengths and weaknesses going in

Movistar KOI
– Pros: the same five players as last year, and they’d already shown they could take out an LPL seed in Bilibili Gaming.
– Cons: they were coming off a clean 0-2 against an LCK team, and had never beaten T1.

T1
– Pros: a 62.7% season game win rate and top-side lanes that had been winning games early all event.
– Cons: they’d already dropped a game to Dplus KIA, which showed they could be beaten in a scrappy early game.

How the series played out

KOI had first selection in both games and took first pick each time, while T1 selected blue side.

Game 1. KOI started well. They made an early move on T1’s Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok, ganking him in the mid lane to gain a slight lead. T1 clawed it back with picks around the map. A big fight at the Baron pit, where T1 caught MKOI’s scattered members, decided the game. Doran ended on a 6/0/6 scoreline, repeatedly catching out MKOI’s Myrwn. Dot Esports put the game at about 40 minutes.

Game 2. This one was one-sided. Peyz’s Jhin and a Karma support executed a dive kill on ‘Myrwn’s Ornn, then Karma roamed top to help kill Elyoya’s Xin Zhao. Before long T1 applied pressure across all lanes simultaneously with a 10,000 gold lead. Dot Esports summed it up: the LEC team had essentially no answers to T1’s aggression.

Shotcaller's note

Doran went 6/0/6 in Game 1, and both games swung on top-side fights. KOI’s game plan of ganking Faker early won lanes but never turned into a win.

Verdict: what the result means

T1 were the stronger team and showed it. They became the third team to reach the quarters after Gen.G and Dplus KIA. The series also drew 1.73 million Peak Viewers, according to Esports Charts.

KOI aren’t out yet. T1 move on to the Knockout Stage at 3-1, while KOI drop to 2-2 and will get one final best-of-three in Round 5. The winner reaches the quarterfinals. The loser is eliminated. Round 5 is on Saturday, October 31. When we checked, KOI’s opponent for that series hadn’t been confirmed in the published draw.
